ALAIN MICHARD Workshop for Actors and Dancers (professional and good level amateurs)
Alain Michard, a France-based choreographer with interdisciplinary activities, stayed in Kyoto in 2017 under the artist-in-residence program of Kyoto Art Center. He also conducted “Promenade Kyoto,” a workshop on the theme of dialogue between the city and the body, at Nuit Blanche KYOTO with plastic artist Matthias Poisson.
Returning to Kyoto for the first time in seven years, Alain will hold a workshop for actors and dancers based on his documentary work.
【About the workshop】
★Participation Eligibility: Actors and Dancers, professional and good level amateurs
★Date: November 6, 7, and 8, 2024, 17:00 to 21:30 each day.
* There is a possibility that non-participants will be invited to present their results on the final day.
Details will be announced as soon as they are determined.
This workshop is based on the theatrical and cinematographic practice of Alain Michard.
It will be based on the documentary film L’Autre pays (The other country) currently being filmed in
Japan (in the Tochigi prefecture) Each day the workshop will begin with a body practice, simple exercises, linked to the daily body, memory, group dynamics, and the relationship to space.
Then, the work will focus on the interpretation of the story and real “characters”, from the
documentary movie. L’Autre pays. It will be a question of seeing how we move from the role of
the narrator to the incarnation of a character.
Participants will also work on their own documentary material, based on their memories and
observations of situations and “characters” in their daily, friendly, family, social and professional
contexts.
We will explore the links between documentary and fiction, between memory and action.
With this central question : how do we make theater with everyday-life materials?
We’ll search on how to collect it in public and private spaces, by the observation of groups and
single people.
The narratives and short stories collected becoming theater material, they will inspire a new
interpretation and deepens the contents.

Profile
Alain MichardChoreographer, Artist
Alain Michard lives in France, he is a multidisciplinary artist.
He develops his projects by navigating, simultaneously and transversally, from the stage (dance and theater) to public space, and from visual arts to cinema.
He works in close connection with the human and physical contexts (landscape, architecture) where his creations are made, between documentary and fiction.
His shows and performances are based on investigation, collection and recycling, scenography and in-situ, but also the direction of actors, and sound creation.
His films and shows are crossed by the themes of the links between community, society and intimacy.
The question of the intersections of individual and collective history, of memory, are at the heart of several of his plays (VIRVOUCHER, Ecole ouverte, La Carpe et le lapin, Fffiiiiaaaaac, Parkinson) and his films (On air, En danseuse , L'Autre pays).
His films range from documentaries (Encore chaud, L’Autre pays) to fictions (On air, Clandestine, Les garçons) to visual creation linked to dance (Ascension, En danseuse, Feuille, Carton).
Some of his texts are published in art magazines and during exhibitions and performances: + si affinitiés, Entre les dalles, Journal d'anticipation, J'ai tout donné, Véhicule
